A well-known ant native to our own soil! Our ant colonies consist of a queen along with brood and a number of workers. This number depends on the number of eggs that have developed into ants (egg-larva-pupa-ant). This colony already contains 100+ workers.
The colonies are polygynous, meaning that multiple gynes, or queens, can occur in a nest (not necessarily). This colony has 2 gynes, which are only slightly larger than regular workers.

Please note, these ants have a very clear seasonal distribution, so it may happen that a colony has little (or even no) brood during the autumn and winter period. This will return with higher temperatures in spring!

Please note, special warranty terms apply

Myrmica rubra is a fun species to keep, but significantly more difficult than, for example, Lasius niger or Messor barbarus. We guarantee that the queen and ants will arrive alive, but we cannot go beyond that. A Myrmica rubra colony can die within a few days under incorrect (especially too dry) conditions. Therefore, its lifespan is clearly dependent on the housing and care provided. If something is already wrong upon receipt, that is, of course, our responsibility and at our risk. This must be reported to us within 24 hours (after receipt) with clear photos. If you have doubts about the care and purchase of a Myrmica colony, please contact us first for advice!

Suitable for

The ant colony is intended for sand and gypsum ant farms. Sand is preferred here. We also recommend using an outworld. The ants can get their food there and dispose of waste. Many products have an integrated outworld. For Myrmica, this outworld is extremely important. They must continuously be able to obtain fresh/moist food here.

If you are looking for ants for a gel ant farm, we recommend the ant family.

Packaging and shipping

The colony is in a test tube with a cotton wool plug at the back to keep the water supply partly moist in the nest tube. Due to its size, the colony cannot stay in this tube for too long without care (maximum a few days after receipt). We guarantee the life of the queen upon arrival. The ant colonies are safely packaged and shipped in foil.

Specifications and information

Scientific name

Myrmica rubra

Dutch name

Red sting ant

Difficulty level

3.
