Fruit Fly Culture Medium
Culture medium, enough to start a new culture in our separate plastic breeding pots with ventilated lids. The breeding pots are also available separately. Mix the culture medium with lukewarm water until it is well blended; it should be firm but not liquid (like yogurt). Then place cardboard shavings or wood wool in the pot, and your culture is ready. Add at least 50 fruit flies and find a nice warm spot in the house.
The bag contains approximately 50 grams, suitable for starting 1 fruit fly culture.
Please note: we cannot guarantee the effectiveness when using individual components. If you want everything in the correct quantities, order the complete fruit fly culture or refill on our website.
Leaf insect, Phyllium sp.
This species was formerly known as Phyllium sp. Leaf insects belong to the group Phasmida, which also includes stick insects. Leaf insects can be of various species, but always fall under the large species, hence the information below on the giant leaf insect.
The information below mainly concerns PSG72.
Appearance and Origin
The species lives only in western Malaysia and is the largest known species.
The animal has excellent camouflage: its body strongly resembles a ragged leaf. Not only is the color green and the body flat and oval, but the veins are also mimicked. Its legs are brown and have indentations, appearing irregular. This makes it even more difficult for a potential enemy to spot them. If the animal is caught anyway, it plays dead, because insectivores do not eat dead insects and sometimes drop the leaf insect. This is also its only defense; a leaf insect is otherwise completely defenseless.
An adult female is over 13 cm. (PSG278 remains a bit smaller with a maximum of 8 cm.)
Reproduction
Reproduction is special. Males do occur in nature, but they are not needed for breeding animals in captivity. In captivity, therefore, only females are available. The females then produce unfertilized eggs which do hatch and are all female. This is called parthenogenesis. (In PSG278, males also occur; they are smaller and narrower and can fly reasonably well with substantial wings.)
Development
All specimens born through parthenogenesis are females. Gynandromorphism also occurs in this species: the phenomenon that an individual possesses many male characteristics, yet is female. Young animals are called nymphs and are reddish-brown until their first molt. When the nymphs have just hatched from the egg, they look like small spiders. Later, when they start eating, they turn green. The eggs hatch after 5 to 6 months, and it takes almost a year for the animals to mature. The leaf insects go through 8 molting stages.
Housing
Giant leaf insects are kept at room temperature. Approximately 20 o to 25o Celsius. They need a terrarium of at least 20cm long x 20cm wide x 40cm high. Such a tank is suitable for housing about five adult animals. There must be sufficient ventilation.
Feeding
They feed on blackberry leaves. If available, a sprig of rose leaves or oak leaves.
A jam jar with holes in the lid serves as a vase for the blackberry sprigs. This prevents eggs and nymphs from ending up in the water and keeps the blackberry leaves fresh for one to two weeks.
It is important that the climate in the tank is relatively dry. This is achieved by spraying sparingly with a plant mister. The animals drink moisture from fresh leaves. So always ensure fresh blackberry leaves with the branches/stems in moisture as described above.
Handling and moving
Sometimes it is necessary to move the leaf insects. The small specimens can most easily be picked up by the tip of their "tail" and carefully pulled loose if they are holding on. If you find this scary, a spoon is a good solution. With a little skill, they will walk onto it themselves. Carefully pick up the larger specimens. If they are holding onto a twig, do not pull hard. You can also manipulate them so that they walk onto your hand themselves.
Replacing blackberry leaves for nymphs
The advice is to first replace the withered leaves by cutting the leaves from the old twigs in the tank and leaving them in the tank with the nymphs attached. Remove the twigs and some leaves. Continue this until all twigs have been removed from the jam jar with holes. Once the jam jars have been cleaned, they are put back, and new twigs are placed in them. A few days later, you remove the dried leaves. Make sure to check carefully that there are no nymphs on them.
Maintenance
On the bottom, for example, lay a few centimeters of sandbox or tile sand. This prevents mold. The dry sand easily absorbs moisture and also easily releases it again. Before the sand is used, it needs to be thoroughly dried.
You can just leave the droppings. As well as the leaf litter. If there is a lot, you can easily scoop it up with a spoon and remove it. If there are eggs, you can also leave them.
When cleaning, you put droppings with eggs on a tray and can separate them quite easily. For example, you can use a tea strainer to quickly separate the sand from droppings and eggs. To then separate the eggs from the droppings. Inside, the windows are only cleaned with kitchen paper and a little warm water.

Sand Loam Combination 200 gram
A combination of sand and loam (clay), specially mixed by us (manually) for use in an Ant Farm or Terrarium. This combination ensures good stability so that excavated tunnels and chambers do not collapse. The color scheme is a mix of red and yellow, the overall texture is finer than the photo shows.
Because the sand is very fine, it is important to first moisten the sand loam after filling or decorating, so that it becomes firm. After it is dry, the ants can be placed or connected.
The price is per 200 grams. The content of the Ant Farm determines how many grams you need. Our advice is to fill a maximum of 2/3 of the Ant Farm with this sand loam combination, so that there is room for the ants to raise and move sand, to arrange their own environment.
- Town house 300 grams (two bags of sand loam so you have enough reserve)
- Urban villa 500 grams (three bags of sand loam so you have enough reserve)
Want to fill your own Ant Farm with sand?
Calculate the volume yourself now:
Length x width x height in centimeters is the volume in cm3
With 1000 grams of sand you fill approximately 600 cm3
Divide the volume in cm3 by 600 cm3 to know how many kg of sand you need.
Zebra Mantis - Omomantis zebrata
The praying mantis's stage is from L3 to L7
Information
Omomantis zebrata is a species of praying mantis belonging to the family Mantidae. The common name “Zebra Mantis” comes from the striking zebra-like stripes covering its body. When disturbed, this praying mantis often displays its remarkable flying abilities, with flights of up to 50 meters! Omomantis zebrata is originally from tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
Although small, they have a great voracity for insects; a spectacular species!
Appearance
Their bodies are adorned with a unique striped pattern of bright, striking colors such as yellow, pink, blue, and green, with a black border along the outer edge of each color.
They are relatively small in size; their bodies grow to be anywhere between 5 and 7 centimeters, with females growing one centimeter larger than males.
Their front legs are noticeably longer than their hind legs and are equipped with spines that they use to catch their prey.
Their heads are triangular and have a pair of large eyes at the front, allowing them to see in many directions and detect small movements in the air.
Behavior
Omomantis zebrata is generally a peaceful creature and shows no aggression towards humans or other animals. They are considered quite docile, and you can often see them admiring their surroundings with their quick eyes.
Omomantis zebrata can also be considered shy, as they tend to hide or retreat when they are afraid of danger. They are also quite active in the morning and evening and may show some curious behavior during this time.
Despite being small, they are quite brave and will not hesitate to come out and explore their habitat if they feel safe and comfortable. Furthermore, they are also excellent climbers and may even try to climb on your shoulder and hands if they are given food.
Food
The Zebra Praying Mantis primarily feeds on other small insects in its natural habitat. They tend to hide during the day and become more active at night to hunt prey more effectively.
Omomantis zebrata occasionally feeds on small flowers with nectar and pollen, but usually feeds on their normal insect diet. Due to their small size, they cannot tackle prey much larger than themselves.
In their natural habitat, the Zebra Praying Mantis also eats any nutritious plants or decaying vegetation they encounter, so this should also be considered when providing food for them in captivity.
Environmental Requirements
The ideal temperature is around 24 °C, but room temperature is also fine. At night, it can be slightly cooler than during the day, but at least 18 °C.
This species does not have high humidity requirements, but it is important to spray with water every day or every other day. A guideline humidity is about 40 to 65%. Being too humid for too long is the number one cause of death for this species.
As with all praying mantis species, this species needs an enclosure that is at least 3x the length of the animal in height, and at least 2x the length of the animal in width. For an adult animal, this means at least 27 cm in height and 18 cm in width. A good size for a terrarium would be 20 x 20 x 35, so there is also room for artificial plants and many perches.
Black Seed Ant - Tetramorium caespitum colony with 10+ workers
Species
The black seed ant (Tetramorium caespitum, formerly known as the pavement ant) is a species of ant from the subfamily Myrmicinae. The scientific name of the species was first validly published in 1758 by Linnaeus. The black seed ant is found in temperate climates and primarily lives on the ground. There, it occupies a territory with a diameter of about thirty meters. The workers do not venture beyond this territory, but this area is defended tooth and nail. The black seed ant is quite aggressive towards other ants, especially towards its own species. Battles have been described between entire colonies, with thousands of ants fighting for hours, biting each other, tumbling over each other, pulling at each other, and killing each other. More and more ants are lured to the battleground by scent trails. With their large mandibles, necessary for grinding seeds, they can also fight excellently. It is a species that easily adapts to changes in its environment. It is usually seen in sunny, dry places, sometimes in damp grasslands, but also in inhabited areas, particularly between paving stones. The nests are usually located under stones. The colonies are relatively large, with populations of up to about 10,000 workers. They typically contain multiple queens, each producing about five to forty eggs daily. Extensive tunnel systems are dug; this is beneficial for the environment due to the aeration it provides. The queen and males are considerably larger than the workers, measuring 8 mm and 3.3 mm in length, respectively. Their color is dark brown with slightly lighter legs.
Suitable for
The ant colony is intended for acrylic, plaster, and sand ant farms. We also recommend using an arena. The ants can get their food and dispose of waste there. Many products have an integrated arena. You will find this ant colony in a special offer combination price with various Ant Farms.
If you are looking for ants for a gel ant farm, we recommend the ant family.
Packaging and shipping
The photo shows how the product is actually delivered by us. The colony is in a test tube with a cotton wool plug behind it providing water to keep the nest tube partially moist. The colony can remain in this tube for up to a few weeks without care (after receipt). We also guarantee the life of the queen for this long. If the queen does not arrive alive or dies within a few weeks, we will provide a replacement colony.
