Now you can really get started. Butterfly breeding can be done from March to September. The aim is to send 10 caterpillars, with a guarantee of receiving at least 7, and that these will grow into healthy butterflies.
First, the caterpillars receive their own food (included) so they can grow well. Then, they hang upside down in crystal-like spun cocoons. In the final stage, they emerge as beautiful butterflies. Observe them for a few days and then release them.
Usage
The butterfly garden is reusable, and after the butterflies have flown out, it's also a perfect home for other insects such as ladybugs, praying mantises, or stick insects. The product can therefore be used multiple times to study nature more closely.
What's included in the Giant Butterfly Kit
- Foldable and openable giant 45 cm Habitat
- Pipette for feeding the caterpillars
- Coupon for requesting the caterpillars (you only pay shipping costs - PayPal/credit card).
- Instructions, simple multilingual user manual. Detailed booklet in English.
- The butterfly life cycle depicted in plastic models (egg, caterpillar, cocoon, butterfly)
Giant Leaf Insect - Phyllium giganteum PSG72
Depending on our breeding stock, you will receive PSG72 or PSG278. The nymphs are between L2-L6.
This species was formerly known as Phyllium sp. Leaf insects belong to the group Phasmida, which also includes stick insects. Phyllium giganteum has also been assigned a PSG number, namely PSG 72. Phyllium sp. is native to Malaysia.
The information below mainly concerns the PSG72.
Appearance and Origin
The species lives only in western Malaysia and is the largest known species.
The animal has excellent camouflage: its body strongly resembles a frayed leaf. Not only is the color green and the body flat and oval, but the veins are also mimicked. The legs are brown and have notches and appear irregular. This makes it even more difficult for a potential enemy to see them. If the animal is caught anyway, it plays dead, because insectivores do not eat dead insects and sometimes drop the leaf insect. This is also its only defense; a leaf insect is otherwise completely defenseless.
An adult female is over 13 cm. (PSG278 remains a bit smaller, with a maximum of 8 cm.)
Reproduction
Reproduction is special. Males do occur in nature, but they are not needed for breeding animals in captivity. In captivity, therefore, only females are available. The females then lay unfertilized eggs which do hatch and are all female. This is called parthenogenesis . (For PSG278, males also occur; they are smaller and narrower and can fly reasonably well with strong wings.)
Development
All specimens born through parthenogenesis are females. This species also exhibits gynandromorphism : the phenomenon that a specimen possesses many male characteristics but is still female. Young animals are called nymphs and are reddish-brown until the first molt. When the nymphs have just hatched from the egg, they look just like spiders. Later, when they start to eat, they turn green. The eggs hatch after 5 to 6 months and it takes almost a year for the animals to mature. The leaf insects go through 8 stages of molting.
Housing
Giant leaf insects are kept at room temperature. Approximately 20 o to 25o Celsius. They need a terrarium of at least 20cm long x 20cm wide x 40cm high. Such a tank is suitable for housing about five adult animals. There should be sufficient ventilation.
Food
They feed on bramble leaves. If available, a sprig of rose leaves or oak leaves.
A jam jar with holes in the lid serves as a vase for the bramble sprigs. This prevents eggs and nymphs from ending up in the water and keeps the bramble leaves good for one to two weeks.
It is important that the climate in the enclosure is relatively dry. This is achieved by limited spraying with a plant sprayer. The animals drink moisture from fresh leaves. So always ensure fresh bramble leaves with the branches/stems in moisture as described above.
Handling and moving
Sometimes it is necessary to move the leaf insects. The small specimens are easiest to pick up by the tip of their "tail" and can be gently pulled loose if they are holding on. If you find this daunting, a spoon is a good solution. With a little skill, they will walk onto it themselves. Carefully pick up the larger specimens. If they are holding on to a twig, do not pull hard. You can also manipulate them so that they walk onto your hand themselves.
Replacing bramble leaves for nymphs
The advice is to first replace the withered leaves by cutting off the leaves from the old twigs in the enclosure and leaving them in the enclosure with the nymphs on them. Remove the twigs and some leaves. Continue this until all the twigs have been removed from the jam jar with holes. Once the jam jars are cleaned, they are put back and the new twigs are placed in them. A few days later, remove the dried leaves. Make sure to check carefully that there are no nymphs on them.
Maintenance
On the bottom, place, for example, a few centimeters of sandbox or tile sand. This prevents mold. The dry sand easily absorbs moisture and also easily releases it. Before the sand is used, it needs to be thoroughly dried.
You can simply leave the droppings. As well as the leaf litter. When there is a lot, you can easily scoop it up with a spoon and remove it. If there are eggs, you can also leave them.
When cleaning, you can put droppings with eggs on a tray and separate them quite easily. For example, you can use a tea strainer to quickly separate the sand from droppings and eggs. Then separate the eggs from the droppings. Inside, the windows are cleaned only with paper towels and a little warm water.
Giant Mantis Hierodula sp
The stage of the praying mantis is from L3 to L6
Information
Hierodula is also called Giant Mantis in English.
A Hierodula is easy to care for and grows large, making it a popular beginner species. Read more here for basic information about this special insect.
Appearance
This type of praying mantis is usually light green, but there are also yellow, beige, and brown variants. The beige animals, when adult, appear somewhat pinkish. The difference in color is mainly related to the environment in which the animal is kept. They can develop a different color within a few days.
This is one of the largest species of praying mantis successfully kept in captivity. Females grow larger than males. Males are narrower with slightly longer wings. Females are wider, with wings that reach the abdomen.
Behavior
Hierodula is a fierce type of praying mantis. It actively hunts its prey once it has spotted it. A cricket walking on the bottom of the enclosure is quickly noticed, and the chase is soon on. The prey then quickly ends up in the raptorial arms of this predator.
Food
Adult Hierodula can easily be fed adult crickets, as well as cockroaches and sub-adult locusts. They can also handle large adult locusts, but there is a small chance they might get injured by the jumping legs if they don't grasp them properly.
Environmental Requirements
The ideal temperature is about 24 °C, but room temperature is also fine. At night, it can be slightly cooler than during the day, but at least 18 °C.
This species does not have high demands for humidity, but it is important to mist daily or every other day. A guideline humidity is about 40 to 65%. Being too humid for too long is the number 1 cause of death for this species.
As with all praying mantis species, this species needs an enclosure that is at least 3 times the length of the animal in height, and at least 2 times the length of the animal in width. For an adult animal, this means at least 27 cm in height and 18 cm in width. A good size for a terrarium would be 20 x 20 x 35, so there is also room for artificial plants and many perches.

Jumping Spider - Phidippus Ometepe
The spiders are sold at a stage between L3 and L7.
Information
Phidippus Ometepe is a jumping spider native to the island of Ometepe, Nicaragua. Like all jumping spiders, these animals are quite agile and enjoy being seen. Shortly before molting, they climb into their web and remain there until the process is complete. These animals are hunters and catch their food without problems. It is always a spectacle to watch them!
Appearance
The base color of the females is a shimmering metallic green. On the abdomen, it has an orange and black striped pattern. The males of this species have an inconspicuous black base color. In adulthood, this transitions more to grey. Their heads develop green/blue hues. A colorful species!
Behavior
Jumping spiders are true hunters. When offered a fly or cricket, they will quickly hunt and catch their prey with a leap. They are active during the day, making them often highly visible. At night, they sleep in a self-made cocoon or hide under a plant.
Food
Adult regius spiders eat curly-wing flies, houseflies, crickets, or other small insects. Any cricket that is not eaten must be removed from the enclosure, as it can disturb or even kill the spider during a molt or sleep. Be vigilant about this. Young regius spiders eat fruit flies, curly-wing flies, or micro crickets. Regius spiders can handle prey as large as themselves. They drink from the spray water; ensure it is fresh and not too cold.
We advise not to spray too much; they prefer dryness. A few drops that they can drink/collect themselves are sufficient. And fruit flies are initially the best food source.
Environmental Requirements
A jumping spider's enclosure should be approximately 5x5x7cm with good ventilation. Ultimately, a terrarium of 20x20x30cm may be suitable for adult spiders. Humidity should be between 40 and 70% with an ideal temperature of 26-28 degrees Celsius. It is important that the spider can drink something (a drop) every few days; much more is not needed.
Heating can be done with a lamp; do not use a heat mat from below (due to the risk of dehydration). Placing the enclosure in a bright spot at room temperature is also possible, though they may be somewhat less active.
Group Housing
Jumping spiders cannot be housed together due to cannibalism.
Jumping Spider - Phidippus regius "White" Bahama
The stage at which the spiders are sold is between L3 and L5. Please note, they are still very small (a few mm in size) and feed on fruit flies.
Information
Phidippus regius "White Bahama" is a jumping spider from North America and the Caribbean, this species comes from the Bahamas. Just before molting, they climb into their web and stay there until the process is complete. These animals are hunters and catch their food without problems. It is always a spectacle to watch them. Suitable prey animals include fruit flies, houseflies, or small crickets. Anything not eaten within a day should be removed from the terrarium. We feed and water young spiders every 3 days and adult spiders once a week. Humidity should be 70% with good ventilation. We spray some water in a corner; this is sufficient, and it is better to spray sparingly than too much. The animals absorb water droplets as needed and thus quench their thirst.
Appearance
The female and male are approximately 3-4 cm in size, including their legs. The female has a larger abdomen, but the male has slightly longer legs. The male's color is always the same, black speckled with white with green chelicerae, in contrast to the female's, which varies from light white-beige to dark brown or even solid black.

Heating can be done with a lamp; do not use a heating mat from below (due to the risk of dehydration). Placing the enclosure in a bright place at room temperature is also possible, though they may be somewhat less active. The desired temperature is 24-30°C during the day, a minimum of 14°C at night.
Group housing
Jumping spiders cannot be housed together due to cannibalism.
Jumping Spider - Phidippus regius Apalachicola
The spiders are sold at a stage between L3 and L7.
Information
The Apalachicola jumping spiders are found in the Southeastern United States. These spiders are known for their agility and active behavior. They grow to about 2 to 2.5 cm and can live for 1.5 years. These spiders do make a web, but they don't always use it to catch their prey, unlike other spiders. The Apalachicola hunts its prey, which is very entertaining to watch.
Did you know?
Apalachicola is a place in the American state of Florida, and it's presumed the spider was discovered there and named after this location.
Appearance
The color of the Apalachicola jumping spider is black with white, and the amount of black and white can vary per spider. The female spider is often brightly colored and has much less black on the cephalothorax than the males. The males are predominantly black with some white spots.

Sugar water
A sugar water mixture, specifically intended for ants. It is a supplement to an ant diet of honeydew and live insects (and seeds for Messor and Pheidole).
The price includes a tube and cotton pad, from which the ants can suck the sugar water. Suitable for several months. Offer a few drops of sugar water on the supplied cotton pad in a feeding dish or arena, or use the cotton pad as shown in the picture. Make sure the cotton pad stays moist. Every few weeks, push the cotton pad a little deeper into the liquid with the back of a pencil (for example).
The tube is suitable for reuse.
