How the Gel Ant Farm works
How long do ants live in the Gel Ant Farm?
Ants live from a few months to a year. The age can therefore vary. The worker ants we supply should last several weeks to a few months and are guaranteed to dig in the gel. If all the ants die within the first two weeks, we will send replacements free of charge.
How long does the gel last?
The ant farm gel is a complete food source for the ants. Since ants don't eat much and even dig up and reuse waste from the gel, it is more than sufficient for an ant family. We also have gel refills available in various colors to start anew.
Maintenance & care
Maintenance and care are simple:
- No additional feeding is necessary.
- Open the lid slightly a few times a week for some fresh air.
- Remove condensation and waste if possible.
Ants
This offer includes ants. These are worker ants from Southern Europe that create an underground system of tunnels and chambers in nature. The ants are sent in a test tube. They can easily stay in this tube for another week before being placed in the Ant Farm. How to place the ants is explained in the flyer and our booklet 'Ants are heroes'.
Ant's Kingdom Asteroid (Universe Collection)
The intelligence of ants is from another planet, extraterrestrial! We still only understand a small part of how ants can cooperate so efficiently. The Universe Collection was created to illustrate this supernatural phenomenon. Build your own universe now, starting with this Asteroid and slowly expanding to a complete system!
This ant farm is perfectly suited for both small and medium-sized colonies of species such as Lasius, Myrmica, Pheidole, Messor, and Formica.
These nests are equipped with a foam part, which keeps the nest moist for about 1 week. To moisten the nest, you can wet this foam (syringe included). It absorbs and distributes moisture without the risk of flooding chambers and tunnels. The foam must therefore remain moist so that the ants find a good environment in this nest.
The system is very practical with this unique water supply. Even cleaning the complete Ant Farm is possible. You first connect another enclosure or nest tube to which the ants move, and then the acrylic nest can be easily unscrewed and rinsed with water.
The nest is easy to expand through the 10 mm opening on the outside. Other enclosures can be connected with hoses.
Ant Colony
Almost all ant colonies can be kept in this nest. Choose a colony above for a special price.
Feeding Set
The diet of a Lasius ant colony consists of a combination of sugar water, honeydew, and fruit flies, and for a Messor colony, seeds are added. A feeding set can be ordered above.

Ant Farm Sand Set - Introduction
The Ant Farm sand set is handmade from high-quality transparent plexiglass and complete, as it includes both a nest part and an arena in the setup.
The top is a sleek outworld, closed with a convenient ventilated lid. The arena stands on a display so that it is higher than the nesting area. The bottom is the nesting part. Both the nesting part and the arena can be expanded on both sides. So, over time, you can build an enormous ant city.
The Ant Farm sand is suitable for both small and large ant species, including Messor and Lasius. The separate outworld makes it easy to feed the colony with fruit flies and sugar water or honeydew (and the seed mix for harvester ants. Please note that the colony needs to get used to the new environment initially and will develop further from the nest tube (test tube). Therefore, cultivating a colony requires some patience.
The Ant Farm sand set includes a bag with sand-loam filling, a 10ml moisture syringe for adding moisture, and if you also order an ant colony, you will, of course, receive our booklet 'Ants are heroes' with all the information about starting your own ant colony. The Ant Farm sand set is a complete set with a great appearance.

We make this Ant Farm sand set entirely by hand in-house in the Netherlands! Due to this production method, you may see small imperfections in the product (such as very light spots or edges). How long do ants live in the Antquarium?
Ants live between 60 days and a year. If you catch or buy them, you don't know how old they are or how long they will live. On average, our ants last a few months. Sometimes we hear enthusiastic stories from people who have had some ants in the gel ant farm for more than a year. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the lifespan of ants, but if all ants die in the first two weeks, we will send a new ant family for free (provided the gel was prepared correctly).
How long does the gel remain a food source for the ants?
The Antquarium gel is a complete food source for ants. Since they don't eat much and even dig up and reuse waste from the gel, they can last for months up to a maximum of one year. If your gel runs out, start a new Ant Farm with the Ant Farm Refills.
