Ant colony Myrmica rubra 2 gyne 150+
Species
The Myrmica rubra is also known as the common red stinging ant. A well-known ant from our own soil! Our ant colonies consist of a queen along with brood and a number of workers. This number depends on the number of eggs that have developed into ants (egg-larva-pupa-ant). This colony already contains 150+ workers.
The colonies are polygynous, meaning that multiple gynes, queens, can occur in one nest (not necessarily). This colony has 2 gynes, which are only slightly larger than regular workers.
Please note, these ants have a very clear seasonal division, so it can happen that a colony has little (or even no) brood in the autumn and winter period. This will return at higher temperatures in the spring!
Please note, deviating warranty provision
Myrmica rubra is a nice species to keep, but clearly more difficult than, for example, Lasius niger or Messor barbarus. We guarantee the live arrival of the queen and ants, but we cannot go further than that. A Myrmica rubra colony can die out within a few days under incorrect (especially too dry) conditions. Therefore, the lifespan clearly depends on the way of housing and care. If something is already wrong upon receipt, that is of course our responsibility and at our risk. This must be reported to us within 24 hours (after receipt) with clear photos. If you have doubts about the care and purchase of a Myrmica colony, please contact us first for advice!
Suitable for
The ant colony is intended for sand and plaster ant farms. Sand is preferred. We also recommend using an arena. The ants can get their food there and dispose of waste. Many products have an integrated arena. With Myrmica, this arena is extremely important. They must always be able to obtain fresh/moist food here.
If you are looking for ants for a gel ant farm, we recommend the ant family.
Packaging and shipping
The colony is in a test tube with a cotton wool behind it to keep the nest tube partly moist. Due to its size, the colony cannot stay in this tube for too long without care (maximum a few days after receipt). We guarantee the life of the queen upon arrival. The ant colonies are safely packaged and shipped in foil.

| Remarks: | Myrmica rubra is an interesting species. They develop quickly and can also move quickly. Our experience is that it is important to keep part of the nest really well moist. Dehydration is a great danger. The red stinging ant has a stinger and can therefore sting. This the ant only does in case of danger (e.g. entrapment or intrusion into the nest. The sting is not dangerous and feels similar to stinging nettles. For the more serious ant keeper, a little excitement in this hobby is no problem, right?! ;-) |

PSG 9 Australian stick insect nymph
1 Australian stick insect nymph. The sex of the nymphs is not always visible yet.
General information
A young nymph of the stick insect species Extatosoma tiaratum. This is also called the Australian Stick Insect. The species has also been given the number PSG9.
The Australian stick insect originates from Australia and New Guinea and is very popular due to its unusual shapes and size. They look more like a cactus than a branch. They have spines and striking protrusions on their legs. They are often brown in color, and occasionally green varieties of this type are also available. In the photos above you can see how beautiful they are!
What is striking is the big difference between males and females. The females are thick, spiny and 15 cm long. Males are simply narrow with long wings, small spines and a length of about 12 to 13 cm.
Movement and behavior
This stick insect is a peaceful animal. Because most stick insects are nocturnal, they will not move much during the day. In the evening you will see them moving and eating.
Food
This species eats various leaves such as blackberry leaves, raspberry leaves, oak leaves, rose leaves, hazelnut and eucalyptus leaves. Blackberry leaves are easy to find, even in winter. Make sure the food is unsprayed!
The nymphs are raised by us on blackberry leaves, so we recommend using this type of leaf for the nymph. You can also mix different leaves (but at least blackberry) so that they can get used to another type of leaf.
Conditions
The temperature can vary between 20 ° C and 30 ° C. So room temperature is fine for these animals. The stick insect does not make high demands on humidity, make sure you spray at least 2-3 times a week, as they need water to survive. Watch out for mold development.
As with all species of stick insects, the animals require an enclosure that is at least 3 times the length of the animal in height and at least 2 times the length of the animal in width. For an adult female, this means an enclosure of at least 45 cm high and 30 cm wide.
Reproduction
Adult males can be distinguished because they are smaller, have wings and long antennae.
This species can reproduce sexually or parthenogenetically. You can keep the males and females together in an enclosure. The eggs are round brown balls.
The eggs hatch after about 4 to 6 months if a male has fertilized the female, parthenogenetic eggs hatch after six months to a year. Store the eggs on a damp paper. This should always be damp, but not really wet. Preferably keep the eggs at a temperature of 25 ° C. Watch out for mold!
Own breeding
The insects are bred by us and are only shipped by parcel post. The sex is not always visible yet. Have fun observing these amazing animals!
Indian Stick Insect Nymph
Offer
1 Indian stick insect nymph, age from L1.
General Information
The Indian stick insect is also known as the laboratory stick insect and is the most commonly kept species of stick insect in the world. The species has also been given a PSG number, PSG 1. The official Latin name is Carausius morosus.
Most people start with this species when they first begin keeping stick insects. They are easy to keep and eat readily available food, namely ivy.
Movement and Behavior
An Indian stick insect is a calm animal. As most stick insects are nocturnal, they will not show much movement during the day. In the evening, however, you can observe them moving and eating. They cannot bite, scratch, or secrete venom and are easy to handle. They also cannot jump or fly.
Diet
This species eats many types of leaves. They are known for eating ivy. They can live on all sorts of ivy and do not require other leaves to be healthy. You can feed them many other leaves, such as blackberry, raspberry, oak, rose, hazelnut, and privet leaves. Blackberry leaves and ivy are always available in winter.
Plants from stores are sprayed with insecticides! Your stick insects will die immediately from these.
Environmental Requirements
The temperature can vary between 18 °C and 30 °C. Room temperature is therefore perfectly fine for these animals.
The stick insect does not have high humidity requirements; misting the enclosure twice a week as a basic routine is sufficient, but watch out for mold development. They should also have some drinking water.
As with all stick insect species, they need an enclosure at least 3 times the length of the animal in height, and at least 2 times the length of the animal in width. For an adult female, this means an enclosure of at least 24 cm high and 16 cm wide.
Reproduction
This species is parthenogenetic in culture. This means that in captivity, there are only females, and the eggs they lay hatch even without a male being present. These eggs will also only produce females.
Once the females are mature, they will start laying eggs. The eggs are round and brown and have a small cap on them from which the nymph will later emerge. They simply drop them on the ground. The eggs hatch after a few months.
Home Breeding
All nymphs are home-bred and well cared for prior to shipping (via parcel post).
Olive striped millipede (Spirostreptus sp.)
The nymphs of this millipede are 5 to 10 centimeters long and therefore already very strong.
Information
These millipedes originate from Tanzania. They are still very young and grow slowly, but can eventually reach 15 centimeters or more in length. We ship them between 5 and 10 centimeters. Of course, we guarantee the live arrival of these special animals.
Appearance
This species is orange and green ringed. It has a beautiful slender body. The collum (head shield) is orange in color. The antennae and legs of Spirostreptus spec. 1 are also beautifully orange in color. In males, the 7th segment is significantly thickened.
Behavior
Spirostreptus sp. 1 is a calm, economical species and thus the ultimate beginner's species. It can live up to 5 years and become sexually mature after about 2-3 years. As adults, they often remain on the surface during the day and are easy to observe.
Food
The organic material in the substrate is primarily used as food, but supplementary food such as vegetables, fruits, and millipede food is also readily accepted.
Environmental Requirements & Housing
They come from the dry Savannah of, for example, Tanzania. You can maintain the humidity at 50-60%. This species is considered very undemanding, but a temperature of 21°C-26°C and a humidity of 60-80% should be aimed for.
A tank for Spirostreptus spec. 1 should have a minimum surface area of 40 cm x 40 cm and should also be at least 40 cm high. The substrate should be spread at a height of 10 cm, or even higher. The animals are mainly active at dusk and at night, so no additional lighting is needed. To keep the substrate moist, it is advisable to cover it with leaves, pieces of bark, or moss. Climbing branches should not be missing in the enclosure.
Wind-up Butterfly, flying toy
Wind up the butterfly, and when released, it will suddenly take off and fly upwards in an unexpected direction!
Powered by a rubber band. Colors and style may vary.
Packaging dimensions 18x14x0.4 cm
Butterfly dimensions 12x12x0.3 cm
Hymenopus coronatus
The nymph stage is L2 to L5. Please note: The Orchid Mantis is difficult to care for and not suitable for beginners.
Hymenopus coronatus is also known as the Orchid Mantis in English. It gets this name from its pink and white appearance, with which it mimics a flower. This species is highly sought after and loved because of its beautiful bright colors and its relatively large size. Hymenopus coronatus is native to Malaysia.
Appearance
This species of praying mantis mimics flower leaves so that it can catch passing bees and other pollinators attracted to flowers. They therefore mainly live on white and pink flowers such as orchids.
As newly hatched nymphs, these praying mantises are orange with a black head and black legs. After the first molt, they are white with bright pink. This remains the case for the rest of their lives, only some show more pink than others. It occurs that there are completely white animals. When they are adults, they have a green edge on their back that resembles a piece of plant. It is believed that the pink color becomes more prominent if the nymph is in a pink environment. A pink piece of paper along one side of the enclosure would result in pinker nymphs. As adults, they can also change color within a few days, to more or less pink.
An adult female grows to about 6 – 7 cm long, while the male only reaches about 3 cm. This difference is absolutely unmistakable. Furthermore, the males are also narrower with slightly longer wings than the abdomen. The females are wider and have wings that extend to the abdomen.
Behavior
Hymenopus coronatus is a calm species of praying mantis. It usually waits for prey. They can, however, actively hunt if they spot prey.
Environmental requirements
The ideal temperature is around 28 °C, but can vary between 25 °C and 35 °C. At night it can be slightly cooler than during the day, but at least 18 °C. The males should be inhibited in their growth by a lower temperature and less food. They can be kept constantly at 18 °C.
This species requires relatively high humidity. Approximately 60 to 80 % RH. Nymphs are better kept drier, as they are very sensitive to an overly humid environment. It is best to mist them very lightly once a week. As they get older, you should increase the humidity.
As with all species of praying mantis, this species requires an enclosure that is at least 3x the length of the animal in height, and at least 2x the length of the animal in width. For an adult animal, this means at least 24 cm in height and 16 cm in width. A good size for a terrarium would be 30 x 20 x 20 cm (h x w x l), so there is also room for artificial flowers and many perches.
Group housing
This species, like most praying mantis species, cannot be housed together in one enclosure. Sooner or later, cannibalism will strike. Females in particular are often very hungry. Males are also smaller, making them easy prey. It is therefore strongly recommended to house this species separately. As young nymphs, they can be kept together, up to about L3. Of course, feed them well with fruit flies and the like.
Food
Because this species lives on flowers, in nature it primarily eats flying insects. It is advisable to do this in captivity as well. Wild bees and hoverflies can be given as a supplement to a diet of houseflies. Crickets can also be fed, but preferably not as a main food.
Since pollinators such as bees often carry a lot of pollen in the wild, which is also eaten by this praying mantis, it can be useful to feed them pollen in captivity as well. Pollen granules can be ground and placed in a container. Food insects in that container, shake briefly, and ready to feed. The proteins and extra substances in the pollen are believed to result in stronger and healthier animals, and more offspring per ootheca.

Peruphasma schultei
This species is also known as Black Beauty, due to its beautiful dark color. The small red wings that adult specimens develop are particularly distinctive. The stage in which we currently ship is adult.
Appearance
This species is black with yellow eyes, and when adult, it has small red wings.
The difference between male and female is clearly visible in adulthood. The male remains significantly smaller than the female.
Behavior
This species of stick insect is very fast. Especially in the evenings, they tend to move quickly when the enclosure is opened. During the day, they hide among the leaves. When handled roughly, this species of stick insect can secrete an irritating fluid. This substance is harmless but temporarily irritates the eyes and nose. It is therefore advisable not to let children handle the animals unsupervised, as they can sometimes be rather rough.
Food
This species eats privet leaves. Privet is evergreen and is often used as a hedging plant. In the city, this plant can often be found in gardens. Privet branches are easy to propagate. Cut them at an angle and place them in a pot of water, and they will continue to grow. Black beauties are not big eaters, so you don't need too many leaves.
Environmental Requirements
Room temperature is fine for these animals, a temperature between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.
This species requires a humidity of approximately 40 – 60%. This is achieved by misting about twice a week. Keeping them too wet can lead to infections. You can ideally measure this with the 2-in-1 meters available on our site (with or without sensor).
Housing
As with all stick insect species, the enclosure needs to be at least 3 times the length of the animal in height and at least 2 times the length of the animal in width. For an adult female, this means at least 18 cm high and 10 cm wide, but larger is, of course, also allowed. On our site, you will also find a special insect terrarium with a good ventilation strip at the top and a sliding window at the front.
Reproduction
Males and females can be distinguished by their size. Females are thicker and wider and much larger than males. You can keep them together in one enclosure, and when they are ready to mate, they will do so naturally. The eggs are round black pellets. The eggs hatch after 4 to 5 months. Store the eggs on a damp paper towel. This should remain damp but not really wet. Beware of mold!
Pheidole pallidula Ant Colony 10+
Species
This ant is a very small species originating from Southern Europe. Pheidole pallidula ants are also called big-headed ants or fat-headed ants. They are very aggressive towards other ant species and send a relatively large portion of their nest members out to collect food. Additionally, they require more food than the average ant and are constantly searching for it. This is an ant that can easily escape, so ensure you have a good ant farm or prevention measures against escapes. They also need seeds, similar to Messor ants; a mixture of grass seeds.
With proper care, the colony can grow explosively. The ants are very active and there are noticeable size differences among the worker ants (larger colonies will have increasingly larger majors/soldiers).
Our ant colonies consist of a queen along with brood and a number of workers. This number depends on how many eggs have developed into ants (egg-larva-pupa-ant). This colony already contains at least the first 10 workers, meaning these workers were produced by the queen ant herself. This colony also already has majors that are twice as large as the smallest workers.
Food
The feeding kit above, including seeds, provides a complete diet for this species. The kit consists of sugar water, honeydew, fruit flies, and a starter set of seeds. The starter set of seeds is sufficient for the first year.
Suitable for
The ant colony is intended for acrylic, plaster, and sand ant farms. We also recommend using an arena. The ants can collect their food and dispose of waste there. Many products have an integrated arena.
If you are looking for ants for a gel ant farm, we recommend the ant family.
Packaging and shipping
The photo shows how the product is actually delivered by us. The colony is in a test tube with a cotton wool stopper at the back providing water to keep part of the nesting tube moist. The colony can remain in this tube for a few weeks without care (after receipt). We also guarantee the life of the queen for this period. If the queen does not arrive alive or dies within 2 weeks, we will provide a replacement colony.

| Nest type: | Sand nests, relatively deep. Very wide, often under grass. |
| Temperature: | Room temperature, 20-30 degrees |
| Hibernation: | No, but winter rest. Our advice: keep them slightly cooler in winter, around 15 degrees. For example, in a cellar, cooler attic, or shed. November-February Our experience: these ant colonies also develop well at room temperature in winter. |
| Food: | Sugar or honey water and small insects: Our advice for smaller colonies: fruit flies. Also various small seeds (grass seeds, bird seeds, dandelion seeds etc...). Ensure a continuous supply of fresh and preferably live food to meet the hunting behavior of this species. |
| Humidity: | Simple. Advice: Keep part of the nest slightly moist. This species prefers drier conditions than, for example, Lasius niger and Myrmica rubra. |
| Distribution area: | (Southern) Europe and (Northern) Africa |
| Ant farm recommendation: | Acrylic, Plaster, or Sand including the use of an Arena Area |
| Notes: | A very feisty, small ant species. It's interesting to see how they emerge from the nest in large numbers to collect food. This is particularly the case if they haven't had (fresh) food for a while. The colony can grow explosively with proper care. They are quite aggressive, so ensure a well-sealed nest and arena. Worker ants have a shorter lifespan (a few months), which means the colony is constantly developing. A starter setup with a test tube containing the colony and an arena is an excellent start for these colonies, and they can also be kept well in a (smaller) acrylic or plaster product. |

| Hibernation: | No, but winter rest. Our advice: keep them slightly cooler in winter, around 15 degrees. For example, in a cellar, cooler attic, or shed. November-February Our experience: even at room temperature in winter, these ant colonies continue to develop well. |
| Food: | Sugar or honey water and small insects: Our advice for smaller colonies: fruit flies. Also various small seeds (grass seeds, bird seeds, dandelion seeds, etc...). Ensure continuously fresh and preferably live food to accommodate the hunting behavior of this species. |
| Humidity: | Simple. Advice: Keep part of the nest slightly moist This species prefers drier conditions than, for example, Lasius niger and Myrmica rubra. |
| Distribution area: | (Southern) Europe and (Northern) Africa |
| Ant Farm Advice: | Acrylic, Plaster, or Sand including an Arena area |
| Remarks: | A very feisty, small ant species. It is interesting to observe how they emerge from the nest in large numbers to collect food. This is especially true if they haven't had (fresh) food for a while. The colony can grow explosively with proper care. They are quite aggressive, so ensure a well-sealed nest and arena. The worker ants have a shorter lifespan (a few months), which means the colony is continuously developing. A starter setup with a test tube containing a colony and an arena is an excellent start for these colonies. They can also be kept well in a (smaller) acrylic or plaster product. |
Pheidole pallidula Ant Colony 30+
Species
The ant is a very small species from Southern Europe. Pheidole sp. ants are also known as big-headed ants. They are very aggressive towards other ant species and come out of the nest in a relatively large number to gather food. In addition, they need more food than the average ant and are always looking for it. It is an ant that easily escapes, so ensure a good ant farm or prevention against this. They also need seeds like Messor ants; a mixture of grass seeds.
With good care, the colony can grow explosively, the ants are very active and there are nice size differences between the worker ants (in larger colonies, increasingly larger majors/soldiers appear).
Our ant colonies consist of a queen together with brood and a number of workers. This number depends on the number of eggs that have developed into ants (egg-larva-pupa-ant). This colony already contains at least the first 30 workers, and the workers have therefore been produced by the queen ant herself.
Nutrition
The feeding set above, including seeds, is a complete diet for this species. The set consists of sugar water, honeydew, fruit flies, and a starter set of seeds. The starter set of seeds is sufficient for the first year.
Suitable for
The ant colony is intended for acrylic, plaster, and sand ant farms. We also recommend using an arena. The ants can get their food there and dispose of waste. Many products have an integrated arena.
If you are looking for ants for a gel ant farm, we recommend the ant family.
Packaging and Shipping
The photo shows how the product is actually delivered by us. The colony is in a test tube with water supply behind a cotton ball to keep the nesting tube partially moist. The colony can remain in this tube for up to a few weeks without care (after receipt). We also guarantee the life of the queen for that long. If the queen does not arrive alive or dies within 2 weeks, we will provide a replacement colony.

Craftsmanship & material - please note...
Each BioDome is carefully and precisely handcrafted in the Netherlands from laser-cut acrylic. Due to this artisanal production and bonding process, subtle stress structures, also known as crazing, may be visible in the bonded edges.
These fine line structures are a natural characteristic of high-quality acrylic that is precisely bonded and are an inherent part of the manufacturing process. They do not affect the strength, durability, or functionality of the terrarium.
As with other handmade products, this contributes to the unique character of every BioDome.

Explanation
We can well imagine that making a choice is difficult when seeing all the possibilities for keeping ants as pets and all the available (care) products. That is why we have put together a special set with which you are guaranteed the best start you can make; this set is overcomplete!
A sleekly designed plaster Ant Farm forms the heart of this setup. A fully handmade robust plaster nest, very solidly assembled.
The ant farm is specially designed with a unique moisture reservoir. From the center of the nest, you regulate the humidity with the supplied syringe. The chambers in the middle around the moisture reservoir are shallow (8mm), so you can observe the center of your colony well. The chambers on the outside are deeper (12mm), so the workers can store their seeds and food supply beautifully there. All chambers and tunnels are interconnected. Be amazed at how the ants use and arrange this space and experience for yourself whether they adhere to our 'script'!
On both sides, an opening is made to connect the Ant Farm to the nest tube with the colony and the arena.
You understand that we cannot but call this the 'Mega Messor set'. We designed these ant farms based on our years of experience in breeding and caring for ant colonies. Because they are handmade nests, the color scheme and material may vary slightly per product. The photos provide a clear picture.

Explanation
We can well imagine that making a choice is difficult when seeing all the possibilities for keeping ants as pets and all the available (care) products. That's why we have put together a special set that guarantees you the best start you can make, this set is overly complete!
A sleekly designed Ant Farm made of sand (our largest) forms the heart of this setup. This luxurious nesting area is the base where your large ant colony will reside. With the Penthouse (nest 20x20) you receive the sand-loam filling as standard, so that the ants can enthusiastically create their tunnels and chambers. Welcome home!
The Penthouse (nest 20x20) has been specially developed with the well-being of your ants in mind. For example, professional ventilation in the form of the Ant-Blox logo is incorporated into the lid. You can also supply moisture to the sand-loam through the 10 mm opening specially designed for this purpose, without having to remove the lid of the Penthouse (nest 20x20). This opening is normally neatly closed with the sealing cap (included). Be amazed at how the ants use and furnish this space and experience for yourself whether they stick to our 'script'!
An opening has been made on both sides to connect the Ant Farm to the nest tube with the colony and the arena.
We have designed these ant farms based on our years of experience in breeding and caring for ant colonies. Because they are handmade nests, the color scheme and material may vary slightly per product. The photos give a clear picture
