Specialists in ants, free advice

Acromyrmex octospinosus 100-300

Species

The leafcutter ant, Acromyrmex octospinosus with 100-300 workers, also known as the parasol ant from South America. This species is most known worldwide for the fungus they cultivate and the large amounts of leaves they need for it.

Due to this unique behavior, they are extremely suitable for (large) zoos, specific museums, and pet stores.

These colonies are also perfectly manageable for hobbyists, as they grow to several thousand specimens (unlike Atta colonies which can reach enormous numbers (up to hundreds of thousands) of ants).

Nutrition

This species lives on a fungus. To create this fungus, the ants use various leaves. The colonies can only be picked up in our showroom, where we also provide advice on their nutrition.

Suitable for

The ant colony is only suitable if you have knowledge and experience in keeping ants. We expect to be able to offer an Ant Farm setup specifically for this species from early 2020.

Collection only

Because this is a difficult, specific species, sensitive to temperature/humidity, we do not ship it by mail. In addition, we are happy to give brief advice when purchasing such a colony.

Remarks: A very special species that you can find everywhere in zoos and museums. Many hobbyists become fascinated by ants because they have seen this species in a zoo. This also applies to the owner of Mierenboerderij, Jan-Peter Oudenampsen. It is special that we now breed these ants ourselves and can offer them for a home hobby or in a zoo, pet store, or museum.
