Ant Colony Myrmica rubra 2 gyne 30+

Species

Myrmica rubra is also known as the European red fire ant. A well-known native ant! Our ant colonies consist of a queen along with brood and a number of workers. This number depends on the number of eggs that have developed into ants (egg-larva-pupa-ant). This colony already contains more than 30 workers.
The colonies are polygynous, meaning that multiple gynes, queens, can occur in a nest (but not necessarily). This colony has 2 gynes, which are only slightly larger than a regular worker.

Please note, these ants have a very clear seasonal cycle, so it may happen that a colony has little (or even no) brood during the autumn and winter period. This will then return at higher temperatures in the spring!

Please note, differing warranty provisions

Myrmica rubra is a fun species to keep, but significantly more difficult than, for example, Lasius niger or Messor barbarus. We guarantee that the queen and ants will arrive alive, but we cannot go beyond that. A Myrmica rubra colony can die out within a few days under incorrect (especially too dry) conditions. Therefore, their lifespan is clearly dependent on the housing and care. If something is already wrong upon receipt, that is, of course, our responsibility and risk. This must be reported to us within 24 hours (after receipt) with clear photos. If you have any doubts about the care and purchase of a Myrmica colony, please contact us first for advice!

Suitable for

The ant colony is intended for sand and plaster ant farms. Sand is preferred here. We also advise using an arena. The ants can get their food there and dispose of waste. Many products have an integrated arena. With Myrmica, this arena is extremely important. They must be able to continuously obtain fresh/moist food there.

If you are looking for ants for a gel ant farm, we recommend the ant family.

Packaging and shipping

The colony is in one or more test tubes with a cotton ball behind it to keep the water supply in the nest tube partially moist. Due to its size, the colony cannot stay in this tube for too long without care (maximum a few days after receipt). We guarantee the life of the queen upon arrival. The ant colonies are safely packed and shipped in foil.

Specifications and information

Scientific name Myrmica rubra
Dutch name Red stinging ant
Difficulty level 2. Medium
Queen | Gyne: 5-6 mm
Workers: 4-5 mm
Colony type: Polygynous, multiple queens per nest
Nest type: Sand nests, close to the surface, often under stones
Temperature: Room temperature, 15-30 degrees
Hibernation: No, but winter rest. Our advice: keep them
a little cooler around 10-15 degrees. For example, in a cellar,
cooler attic, or shed. November-February.
Our experience: even in winter at room temperature
these ant colonies continue to develop well.
Nutrition: Sugar or honey water and small insects:
Our advice for smaller colonies: fruit flies.
Humidity: Advice: Keep part of the nest slightly moist
Distribution area: (West)Europe
Ant Farm Recommendation: Sand (preferred) or Plaster including use of Arena area
Remarks: Myrmica rubra is an interesting species. They develop
quickly and can move quickly. Our experience is
that it is important to keep a part of the nest really moist.
Dehydration is a great danger.
The red stinging ant has a sting and can therefore sting. It only does
this when in danger (for example, being trapped or intrusion
in the nest). The sting is not dangerous and feels similar to
nettles.
For the more serious ant keeper, a little excitement in this
hobby is not a problem, right?! ;-)
